At NYGA, I found just the right teacher to help me get back into playing and enjoying the guitar: Alon Albagli. Alon's approach is clear, fun, and challenging in a positive way, leading to many "aha!" moments. How cool is that? Alon draws on his extensive knowledge of blues, jazz, rock, and more, teaching concepts that I can apply in any musical context, and he never runs out of patience or good humor. I look forward to the class each week. Thank you, Alon and NYGA for being the real deal!

My daughter has been taking flamenco guitar lessons from Elysa and Jason for almost 2 years. She loves the school and especially all her teachers at NYGA. Although my daughter is only 7 years old (and was just over 5 y.o. when she started at NYGA), Jason and Elysa were able to quickly peak her interest in such a unique form of guitar as flamenco. Because of their constant support and remarkable dedication to my daughter's improvement, she now plays very difficult material with ease and joy. As a parent I am extremely pleased with my daughter's incredible progress, and very happy that we found such a great school and such excellent teachers for her.

I would recommend NYGA in a flash. The instructors are excellent--patient, creative and extremely knowledgeable. And the staff is super accommodating. I've been a student for nearly 2 years and the program has far exceeded my expectations. I began with semi-private lessons as a true beginner, then moved onto private classes to have more one on one attention. You really can't go wrong with either!

New York Guitar Academy and its instructors - for me, Alon Albagli and Michael Valeanu - are nothing short of excellent. Both Alon and Michael are excellent guitar players, well trained and gifted, who are also extraordinary teachers. We move well beyond the pentatonics and basic box positions to learn and understand theory and its application to scales, chord progressions, arpeggios, and soloing. It's a fun class and a great opportunity to learn.

I was given a gift certificate for 2 private lessons. A complete beginner, I felt the approach was right. Had Jason and Nate. It's a fun way to start learning, and I will definitely add this to my list of things I want to do, and I will do (and that I should have done earlier)! I'll not stay in NYC, but it showed me enough to know that I like it already. I haven't taken guitar lessons with any other teachers in NYC or elsewhere, but I did take trumpet, piano, recorder lessons - none of them gave me this sparkle that makes you love it.

My 8-year-old son is now in his second eight-week-class at the Guitar Academy, and we couldn't be happier. Both his first and now his current instructor have been great: they teach songs that he enjoys practicing at home (and we enjoy listening to! Bob Marley, the Beatles, etc.), they encourage him, and they point out errors in a supportive way. We're so pleased to have found the Guitar Academy and highly recommend it to anyone looking for very reasonably priced lessons from professional, patient instructors. I should also mention that while the website says classes can be up to four (I think) there have only been two students - my son and one other - each time, making it virtually like a private lesson.

I love my Flamenco Classes at NYGA. Jason is a wonderful instructor. He breaks down complex strums so that they are easy learn. He is patient, informative and knowledgeable. He is encouraging and points out things that need a little extra work. I not only forward to each class but I also enjoy practicing daily. I am amazed at my rapid progress. I highly recommend Jason and NYGA!

NYGA is a favorite go-to spot each week!! The teachers and staff are incredibly informative, professional, friendly and warm; my child has been taking lessons for almost one year and the progress is amazing. Our family loves the way our house "dances" to the tunes of nightly guitar and singing sessions.

I've learned more from Alon (at the New York Guitar Academy) in 3 months than in 3 years of noodling by myself. What I like most is how Alon embeds the theory lessons (which can be dry otherwise) into practice sessions. For example, we'll deconstruct my favorite guitar solos/riffs and he'll explain why each portion fits the relevant scales and how I can improvise with them. The beauty of this method is that I'm having fun playing my favorite Petrucci/SRV/Montgomery pieces AND actually knowing the modes and where they fit. Jason and the rest of the team run a really great operation here - everyone's friendly and they've always been very accommodating when I've needed to postpone lessons to fit my schedule. Could not recommend NYGA highly enough

Our 8 year old son came to NYGA having never picked up a guitar before. Within a very short time, he was able to play beautiful pieces of spanish flamenco style music for family and friends, which Jason had taught him at his level. Jason was a very motivating, enthusiastic and professional instructor. Overall, we had a great experience at NYGA, and would recommend them to anyone looking for an excellent guitar teacher for their child or themselves.

I love the Flamenco guitar lessons with Jason. He is not only great fun, but he is also an amazing teacher that will break down complex pieces with the patience of an angel. Before I went to NYGA, I used to be far more into singing and the guitar was rather a means to an end to me. My former guitar teacher could bore me to death within minutes and without my passion for singing I probably would have given up playing altogether. Jason's enthusiasm is catching and he manages to pick songs that are challenging and make you work on your technique, but will still sound awesome. Now I love to sit at home each night, happily strumming away the Malaguena and seeing rapid progress. I highly recommend Jason and NYGA!

**Great & FUN classes... Great Teachers... Great relaxed atmosphere** I was taking private classical guitar lessons with a teacher up until June when my teacher unfortunately had to move away. So I looked around for a different school and teacher to continue my lessons. I found NY Guitar Academy online and called them up. They offered to give me a free trial lesson that same night with a teacher so the teacher could assess what I'd learned so far and let me know whether I could join one of their classes, or continue with private one-on-one lessons. I met Jason that night, Jason & his wife Elysa are the founders and owners of NY Guitar Academy and Brooklyn Guitar Academy. First off, I want to say that sometimes finding the right teacher can be a nerve-wracking experience. I loved my old teacher and I was devastated when he moved away. And I've tried other teachers in the past where we didn't have a great rapport or they made me too nervous or anxious and I find that it hinders the learning experience if you are not completely comfortable and relaxed. Upon meeting Jason, right away I felt extremely comfortable with him. I didn't feel anxious or nervous and I tend to freeze up when I get too anxious and I didn't feel that way at all during my trial with him. He was very positive and encouraging during the session, even though I wasn't able to show him a lot of things because I'd only been taking lessons for about 6 months. But he praised a lot of the things that I did and pointed out some areas that I could work on (but in a really nice, encouraging way). I played an excerpt from Romanze and from Malaguena for him and I told him I'd been working on trying to learn Asturias/Leyenda before my old teacher had to leave. Jason asked me if I'd consider learning Spanish or Flamenco guitar which is similar in a lot of ways to Classical Guitar as they share a lot of technical elements but they are also very different in other ways. But he thought because of my interest in the Spanish classical songs that I might be interested in Flamenco so I decided to give it a try. I had a few private lessons with Jason and they were a lot of fun. He is very laid-back and it's a relaxed atmosphere. No stress, no judgement (unless you don't practice... you have to practice if you want to get better!). After a few private lessons Jason said I could join one of his group Flamenco classes that was already in progress and the class is even more fun. I like playing in a group where we're all learning the same thing. Anyway, in addition to the group Flamenco class I'm attending, I signed up for more private lessons with Jason because there was a specific piece that I heard that I wanted to learn. I saw it on YouTube. And Jason is helping me learn the piece exactly the way I heard/saw it on YouTube. I'm having so much fun and because I enjoy it so much, I practice more than I used to. Having fun makes you more motivated to play and practice. I'm having a great experience so far and I highly recommend the classes and teachers at NY Guitar Academy.

Jason is an awesome teacher, who provides excellent instruction. He incorporates written music, verbal instructions and slo-mo demonstrations. I took a group lesson and he easily differentiated to each class members needs so that everyone felt that they were progressing at their own speed. he is endlessly patient and has a great sense of humor, which makes learning how to play pressure free and fun. In the course of 8 weeks I learned multiple chords and half a dozen songs, now that I have the basics down I'm excited to begin a second round of lessons and would recommend the New York Academy to everyone.

I always enjoy my lessons at NYGA. Both of the instructors I've worked with, Alan and Elysa, are highly skilled, knowledgeable, patient and encouraging teachers. My boyfriend, who has been playing guitar for over 13 years, and I, a beginner, have each taken our abilities to a higher level through our individual lessons here. Private lessons highly recommended- Thanks NYGA!

I have taken classes with Jason for about 6 months (3 sets of 8 classes each). He is a great teacher: very skillful, patient, encouraging and can sing well. Every Monday night is enjoyable after a whole day's tiring work. The school provides Guitars so I don't need to bring my own. As a beginner, I really have learned a lot.

I am giving New York Guitar Academy and Jason a 5 star rating for the following 2 reasons: First, Jason is a fantastic teacher. He understands my strengths and weaknesses and adjusts his teaching accordingly. I truly feel like I make progress after every session as he keeps challenging me with the write flamenco pieces that will help me improve my skills. Secondly, the entire staff is very friendly, and on top of their logistics (class scheduling, payments etc.) making the experience very smooth. I highly recommend NY Guitar Academy to anyone who wants to learn guitar from the very beginning, or build on their existing knowledge.

It's something that truly amazes me every time I pick up the guitar and the RIGHT notes come out. My teacher Michael is extremely encouraging and patient with my chord changes and progression, It feels great going to class!! Thank you SO MUCH NYGA for helping me accomplish my dream! NYGA has made my learning experience a fun and enjoyable one. I'm constantly engaged, interested and never bored. I started with no experience in guitar and was extremely scared to learn something new (as many of us are) but now I'm able to play a few (flamenco) songs with confidence thanks to Jason's method of teaching. As a result, I look forward to class every week. The staff and environment are friendly. I recommend NYGA to everyone - beginners, non-beginners, and all ages. An investment that will not disappoint!

I thoroughly enjoyed taking flamenco guitar lessons with Jason. Over the span of more than 2 years, he taught me a whole slew of songs covering numerous different techniques (believe me, there are a lot!), and really built my appreciation for the flamenco style. Did I mention I never even held a guitar before this? This is definitely not an easy style to learn but you'll be amazed how fast you'll pick it up with Jason's patient and thorough instruction and like 20 years experience (just ask his 6-year-olds). The whole NYGA team has been extremely helpful outside of class as well, with last minute reschedules when you need them, or by emailing a pdf of the tabs you lost, etc. This was a truly amazing experience and I highly recommend them for all levels and ages!

My daughter has been taking lessons with Jason. She had 1 year of guitar lessons experience with another private teacher but was not progressing and had lost interest. She started a little less than a year ago with Jason and has already acquired a very good technique. Jason is a great teacher. He immediately identified "bad habits" and worked on correcting them. He is very patient and takes the time to make sure that she gets each part of the songs so that practicing is enjoyable and not a struggle... At the same time, he challenges her with pieces that they choose together to keep her involved and interested. As we chose to, they also dedicate time during each lesson to music reading. The classes she took with sub teachers from time to time were also very good as they picked up right where Jason had left off at the previous lesson. I highly recommend New York Guitar Academy to anyone who wants to play guitar.

Jason and Elysa are amazing teachers. I can't speak highly enough of them. I've learned so much from these two. They have vast knowledge of music and an ability to teach that is invaluable. I always marveled at how they could just name of all the notes on the string from memory like it was nothing and recite music theory like second nature. These are true musicians and if you're looking to just start out on guitar or hone your craft look no further. I'd also personally recommend checking out their album "The Strums of Brooklyn" if you want to hear some truly wonderful playing. Sign up for classes now; you won't be disappointed!

I can only thank God in steering me to New York Guitar Academy. Jason is my instructor, and I can't say enough about how great he is as a teacher. He's patient and thorough. You can ask him any question and he will break it all down for you. I look forward to class and learning something new. Jason is an excellent teacher and very dedicated. It's been a year when I started learning flamenco style. Wasn't easy, especially when it's about the right hand technique. My dear flamenco friend, some "details" you'll never find in the books...I used to play classical guitar time ago and always I thought flamenco music is too complicated for me. With good explanations, perseverance and practicing constantly, soon you'll be on the right path. Of course, I still have many things to learn, but I'm confident I'm not far from what I want to play one day. Also, Jason is an open person and doesn't hide any guitar secrets he knows.

I first heard about NYGA when they were advertising around Sheepshead Bay for a new location that had opened up in the area. Two years later I had decided to take up the guitar but had found out that the Sheepshead Bay location was no longer there. They have another Brooklyn location as well as their midtown location. I ended up going with the midtown location. They were very easy to work with, and my instructor, Roger, was fantastic. You can tell he is extremely passionate about guitar and more importantly, especially for a music teacher, he is patient. I don't have a lick of musical inclination in me, but he remained patient with me and never looked flustered. If you put in the time effort, you WILL learn. I took the first few lessons with a buddy of mine and my friend, who was very diligent in practicing, is able to play relatively well for a beginner now. I, on the other hand, did not put in the same kind of diligence in my practice and now I suffer for it. I plan to go back for more lessons when my schedule permits. I would highly recommend NYGA to anybody.

I would rate the guitar school and teaching as excellent. I travel from eastern Connecticut to NYC (7 hours round trip) because I think Jason is a great flamenco guitarist who knows how to teach the art. He is patient, detailed and has tremendously improved my flamenco technique. He always comes up with new material and falsettas that are authenically sounding and not something learned from a guitar book. I would highly recommend!!!

I'm an experienced guitarist (13+ years). I've been taking classes from Jay for about a year now. I went from knowing nothing about flamenco to being able to jam and accompany dancers. What more can you ask for? Thanks to these guys, I now have a new lifelong obsession. Jay's a top-notch teacher with an excellent sense of humor. Now that I've become immersed in the New York flamenco scene, I can easily spot the difference between technique that is correct and technique that cuts corners. You'll learn the real deal from Jay. Also the school's public events are great fun. Highly, highly recommended!

I look forward to going to lessons at NY Guitar Academy. The hour I spend in class each week is very empowering and valuable. Learning Spanish/Flamenco style has been a goal for a very long time but I never found what I was looking for in other teachers and other lessons. Elysa and Jason are knowledgeable, kind, humorous, and really damn good teachers. Every lesson I hear and feel progress in my guitar-playing. The pieces chosen for students to learn are beautiful and are scaffolded nicely so that there is a progression in practicing new techniques and skills. I am a teacher so I can easily discern others' ability to educate, and Elysa and Jason excel as educators of all ages and abilities. Furthermore, since I am a teacher, I don't make a lot of money. The prices are reasonable and allow people of most economic backgrounds to have access to learning the guitar. Lastly, there is warmth and family appeal in NY Guitar Academy; run and managed by Elysa and Jason, a cute married couple passionate about guitar, as a student you would be supporting a local business and two peoples' efforts at creating a life from and of music

An excellent guitar school! Without any experience at all, I signed up for group lessons with Jason, and I could not recommend it more. I took lessons for over 6 months, but after only the first 8 week course, he had us playing a variety of complete songs, and what's most important, we learned the correct technique and he kept it really fun and interesting at a point when it can be easy to lose interest. After that initial period, I decided I'd prefer individual lessons and started taking the 1/2 hour lesson, where I was able to request specific things to learn, yet still be driven to learn the key aspects of guitar and guitar theory. Jason is an excellent teacher - he's an awesome guitarist, which inspires you to be great, yet he also seems to remember what it was like to learn, so he's very patient and can easily relate to any things you find difficult to do at first. I only stopped because I could no longer put in the time, but it was one of those things that I looked forward to each week and something that I hope to return to sometime soon.

Jason's a great teacher, who slowly and patiently breaks down complicated Flamenco techniques into their basic components, thus actually caring if the student learns what he needs to really start playing Flamencoguitar. He then builds on top of the student's solid foundation he helped form towards more and more complex pieces and techniques. His off-beat sense of humor also makes the class very enjoyable as well as actually learning a lot of material in a short amount of time.

Best Guitar School in NYC. I am a beginner student, on my third teacher in the last year, and Jason is the best by far. We have a group of three of my friends who are all on different levels, and he does a great job of challenging the advanced students and keeping the beginner on pace. He teaches you how to play entire songs with whatever chords that you know, instead of just learning certain parts of songs, which makes practicing much more interesting. His focus on quality technique over learning a lot of new things will benefit me in the long run. His talent as aguitar player inspires students to continue to learn.

Jason is a great teacher. I've been playing steel string for 10 years and had acquired all the bad playing habits you get from learning solo. So I wanted to start learning proper and wanted someone who really knows the actual original rumba flamenca technique more so than just songs. Jason knows his technique first hand. If you are serious about learning proper rumba technique and build on it for the rest of your life, this is the place to go. He corrected my style and focused on technique while learning classic melodies of varying difficulty level. How perfect could it be. Just a wonderful experience.

After moving back to NYC I decided to start learning guitar again (after a sad nearly 5 year break) and was lucky enough to take my first Flamenco lesson with Elysa. Her passion for the art form, patience and teaching style combined with her enthusiasm for my personal learning (she always tried as much as possible to taylor things to keep me interested in learning) kept me wanting to learn more and more and made every lesson fun. Jason, my instructor, is patient, encouraging, and urges me to step up to a new level of my playing. I wanted to start group lessons, along with my private lessons, and he organized it very quickly. The lessons are serious and fun- a wonderful package. I truly enjoy and look forward to my guitar lessons each week! Couldn't have found a better place!!

I'm very happy to have discovered the NY Guitar Academy and would highly recommend it to anyone wishing to learn any style of guitar.
